Nokia Battery Recall
Okie doke, here is the short version of the BL-5C battery story for you all.
Nokia makes lots of mobile phone of different types. Nokia products use a variety of different types of batteries. One Nokia battery is called the BL-5C. Some Nokia BL-5C batteries might have a problem. The problem is that when you charge them, they short out, which makes them heat up. Then they expand and pop out of your phone because they are too big to fit anymore.
Nokia parts like this are manufactured by many different companies. One company that makes BL-5C batteries is called Matsushita. BL-5C batteries that Matsushita made from December 2005 to November 2006 are the ones that might have a problem (not all of them actually do but you can't tell).
To check what kind of battery you have, open your phone and read it. It says Nokia and the battery model on the front (back also actually, so if it's scratched take it out and look on the back). If it's BL-5C, keep reading, otherwise have fun using your proper battery. If you have a BL-5C, take it out of the phone (turn off phone first). Look at the back. If it's made in Japan you might have a problem battery. If it's not made in Japan you're fine. If you have a BL-5C made in Japan, look for the serial number (also on the back). If it's a bunch of twenty-six letters and numbers, go to Nokia's advisory and type it in to check it to see if it's from a batch that has problems. If the serial code of your battery isn't twenty-six letters and numbers, it's not affected.
If you have an affected battery, the Nokia website will guide you on how to get a free replacement BL-5C battery. Until you get it replaced, you can use youe phone as normal. The problem only happens when charging, and doesn't happen to all the affected batteries. You might want to keep an eye on it when it's on charge. When it's off charge, there's no difference from a proper battery.
